The History of Pukkelpop: From Leopoldsburg to Iconic Festival

Pukkelpop, one of Belgium’s largest music festivals, has a rich history that dates back to 1985. The festival began humbly in Leopoldsburg, a small town in Limburg, where it was founded by the local youth organization Humanistic Youth of Leopoldsburg. In its first year, the festival attracted only a few hundred visitors and featured mainly punk and alternative bands. However, this modest start laid the foundation for what would later grow into an international phenomenon.

After a few editions in Leopoldsburg, the location quickly proved too small to accommodate the growing number of visitors and larger artists. In 1988, the festival moved to a new location, namely the (military) Sanicole Airfield in Hechtel (on the grounds of the Beverlo Camp), and eventually, in 1991, to its current home in Kiewit, Hasselt. This relocation marked a turning point in Pukkelpop’s history. The new location offered more space and facilities, allowing the festival to expand and further develop.

In the years that followed, Pukkelpop grew into an internationally renowned festival with an impressive and eclectic lineup. Big names from various genres, such as Radiohead, The Prodigy, Foo Fighters, and Kendrick Lamar, graced the lineup over the years. Nevertheless, Pukkelpop remains true to its alternative roots, with a focus on emerging talent and innovative music.

What once began as a local initiative in Leopoldsburg-Heppen has now become one of the most iconic music festivals in Europe. It is not only a meeting place for music lovers but also an important cultural milestone in Belgium. Pukkelpop continues to innovate while cherishing its rich history, which started in our small village in Limburg.
